Run and Gun Gear: Chest Rig

This is a review of the following chest rig and attachments which I used for the Carolina Run and

Condor Chest Rig

Gun and most likely for future events. I wanted something durable and inexpensive. The total set up was $93. The reason I decided on a chest rig was based on my past running experience with trail running. I was already used to wearing race vests with a water bladder to carry my gear. I saw several set ups. Some used battle belts, chest plate carriers, combo of both, vest rigs, backpacks, competition belts. My reasons for buying this set up was I didn't want to use my competition belt to drag through the mud and obstacles and my other main concern was securing my pistol and magazines while going through obstacles. My competition belt holds up well for short stages but wasn't confident how it functions for a 6 mile race. The bungee chords for the AR magazines, hook and loop closures for the pistol magazines and pistol made me certain of the retention of my gear. The chest rig held 6X AR magazines in a flat set up for any prone shots and crawling under the barbed wire. Overall I was pleased with CONDOR chest rig.

Now for the negatives.

1. Adjustable to a point. If you were wearing a heavier weight shirt, the fit would be fine. Since the event was in the hottest part of the summer, I was wearing a synthetic running shirt, Mudgear brand. I have used this brand for a lot of races including Spartan races and mud runs. I wear a 41R suit jacket and have an athletic build. I could not tighten it enough on the side to be more secure for my fit preference.

2. The shoulder straps starts to rub on your neck if you have a thicker neck (16 1/2"). Would be OK for the first mile or two but after getting wet and sweat the chaffing will begin. I wore a neck buff to help prevent that and also to keep me cool and keep my neck getting burned by the sun.

3. Mag holder pockets held really well so not so easy to get magazine out at times especially when your gloves/hands were wet or muddy. This is where a Mag Assist would have been helpful.

Clean up was easy. I just hosed the mud off and scrubbed with soapy water with Dawn and let hang to dry.

Use what you got and train with it. Everyone will need to figure what works for them and how much they want to spend. Key is to make sure your firearm and gear is secure and you practice running and shooting with it. Not just a 100 yard jog at the range but an actual run in similar conditions of the race to figure out how your rig functions and what you need to adjust. Run, move, crawl, climb with your gear to get used to it.
